* French Rags was founded by Brenda French in California in 1978.

* The origin: Brenda French started knitting long rolls of fabric to test colours and yarns; when people started asking to buy pieces, she officially launched her label.

* The brand quickly grew: In the 1980s and 1990s, French Rags expanded significantly — by one account the company at its peak had three factories and 375 employees. The label had a boutique, upscale position: Designs were carried by major retailers (e.g., Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor) and included stylish knitwear, classic trousers, dresses
